Dairy group leader concerned about possible government shutdown
A farm organization’s policy expert remains concerned about a possible government shutdown this week.
Karen Gefvert is the Government Relations Director for Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative. She tells Brownfield that even with an announced spending agreement in the House, there’s no guarantee it will get the votes needed to pass. “Initiatives in the House have, we would think, been very easy to pass and that doesn’t seem to be the case with the current political dynamic.”
Gefvert is hopeful the continuing resolution successfully moves through Congress so lawmakers can work on other important legislation, like the farm bill. “Funding government will end up taking priority in the month of March, and so we will likely see the farm bill not come up in March. It will likely have to take a little bit of a back seat to make sure our government is funded.”
Gefvert spoke with Brownfield during the Dairy Strong conference in Green Bay, Wisconsin Wednesday.
