Iowa farmer pleased with 2023 crop, looking ahead to 2024
A southwest Iowa farmer says his 2023 crop was a pleasant surprise.
Ray Gaesser raises corn, soybeans, cover crops in Adams County. “We had a really mixed season,” he said. “We had drought and then rain and then drought again, but ended up with a good crop. It was average or maybe even slightly above. The harvest was wonderful. We had a great team and we even finished early this year.”
Speaking with Brownfield at the National Association of Farm Broadcasting convention in Kansas City, he says work hasn’t slowed down even though harvest is over. “We don’t do any fall field work. Everything that we do is no-till. We did get about 4000 acres of cover crops seeded and that’s a record for us. We’ll continue to try to do more of that and protect the soil and clean the water and feed everybody.”
Gaesser says volatility in the commodity markets will be one of his biggest concerns heading into the 2024 growing season.
