FERGUS FALLS, Minn. — As snow piled up on Monday, Oct. 30, outside of Outstate Brewing Company, a group of farmers inside were well aware that any harvest work not complete was going to get more difficult with each passing hour.
It was an added stressor to an already stressful year for much of the farming community.
Rural mental health specialist Monica McConkey
knows the feeling well, as her own father was struggling to get his crop in. She’d fielded calls throughout the week from farmers who were dealt a blow with the recent cold and snow ending some harvest hopes.
“I could just go on and on and on with the stories related to having to plant late, having to harvest late, crops staying out,” McConkey said during a talk with the group that night as part of a talk called “Conversation about Climate and Rural Community Resiliency.” “And that is what I see every day, that they are fighting every day to keep it going even at the cost of their health, and their relationships and their finances.”
In working through difficult situations, the answers are often different, but in general, everyone needs someone who can listen and walk them through the struggle.
But trained professionals who can offer good advice are sometimes hard to find. There is a lack of mental health services from providers that understand the culture of farming, McConkey explained. In a world of few options, McConkey is one of the people farmers can get help from when things are getting out of control. She watched her father battle through the hardships of the ’80s to keep their family farm afloat. She feels that seeing that helped her know how she wanted to help others as she grew up.
McConkey said Minnesota is the only state that dedicates two mental health counselors specifically for farmers. Ted Mathews is the other counselor offering services funded through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s budget. Mathews serves southern Minnesota, while McConkey serves central and northern Minnesota. Both have around 30 years experience in the field.
Since the program started offering the service to farmers in 2019, more and more are finding out about this free resource.
While the farmer may be stressed, so are those family members watching things go downhill. She offers help to them as well. McConkey said it is imperative that family and friends understand why a farmer puts themselves through the ringer.
